Michelle Ash, Chief Innovation Officer, Barrick GoldGMG Chair
Michelle Ash is Chief Innovation Officer at Barrick. In her role, Ash oversees the company's Innovation program, looking both at how innovation can drive productivity in the existing business as well as how it can be harnessed to deliver alternative business models. Ash joined Barrick in January 2016 and brings with her more than 20 years of experience in the mining and manufacturing sectors with a focus on business improvement and change management. Last year, Ash was named to the 2016 list of "100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining" by Women in Mining UK.
Helius Guimaraes, General Manager, Data Strategy, Rio TintoGMG Outgoing Chair
Helius started his professional career in 1987 in a start-up company as a technical lead supporting sales and implementation of an in-house developed Computer Aided Design software for engineering and mining companies as well as utilities, state, and federal government. He designed, developed, and implemented a system for accounting and asset management in several small, middle, and large size organizations. After graduating as a geologist in 1990 and completing a master degree in geosciences, Helius supported the implementation of a new GIS and Remote Sensing laboratory for COMIG – a public organization that promotes mining activities in the Minas Gerais State in Brazil. In 1994 he joined De Beers and developed database and GIS capabilities to support easy access to data for De Beers exploration activities in South America. Later he focused on designing and implementing strategies to manage IT, Information Centre, GIS and Drawing departments. One of the strategies involved the digitalization of historic data and information workflows enabling cost effective decision making processes to support diamond exploration projects. In 2001, Helius moved to De Beers Corporate Headquarters in Johannesburg to manage global programs and projects in all countries De Beers Group Exploration operated, delivering standardized processes and systems as well as supporting the establishment of a global collaborative culture. During this time, he forged strategic relationships with 3rd party vendors for long term value add to support the solutions implemented. In 2003 he completed his MBA and from 2005 developed strategies, architecture, policies, and implemented solutions to support De Beers Group Exploration decision making process in targeting, project reviews, and balancing supply & demand at laboratories spread in different geographical areas. Helius was certified as a Project Management Professional in 2005 and in early 2007 joined Rio Tinto in London to direct the Rio Tinto Exploration Information System & Technology function and the management of its data and information. He led a team, which delivered secure and fit-for-purpose tools and services to facilitate the acquisition, process and interpretation of exploration results. In his current role, Helius is responsible for developing strategies and roadmaps for Rio Tinto Information System & Technology through the translation of Rio Tinto’s business objectives into effective IT solutions and standards. Helius is currently promoting innovation and application of emerging technologies to support Rio Tinto’s strategic objectives. He is the founder Chairman of Rio Tinto’s Enterprise Architecture Council. Helius is a founding member of The Open Group – Exploration, Mining, Metals and Minerals Vertical which focuses on establishing Enterprise Architecture standards and reference models for the industry.

Andrew is currently the Senior Director, Digital Mining, for Barrick with the scope of providing technical information systems and support for the entire Mining Process, which includes everything from exploration, feasibility, construction, production, reconciliation, through mine closure. Understanding that a technical information system is critical to core mining business functions, enabling the management and/or collection of observations and measurements, Andrew and his team focus on: • optimizing data collection, management, and use • data interchange standardization • foundation technology selection and implementation • automation opportunities and autonomous technologies • technical training and skills development • support (application, vendor relationship management, stakeholder management)
Tim Skinner, President, SMART Systems GroupGMG Vice-Chair International Standards
Tim is President of his own consulting practice, SMART Systems Group. He has over 30 years of experience in mining and processing with Cominco, Elk Valley Coal, its predecessor Fording Coal, NYCO Minerals, and his own consulting business, which focuses on systems and automation in mining. The majority of his experience is in surface mining and processing developing and implementing information systems and technology, systems integration, and real time control systems. In early 2007, Tim retired from his CIO position as General Manager, Information Systems for Elk Valley Coal. He had been the senior management leader for Elk Valley Coal and its predecessor Fording Coal for about 20 years, responsible for all corporate system management functions from geological exploration to the consolidated corporate financial statement.
Mark W. Bartlett, Consultant, Desert FalconGMG Treasurer
Mark W. Bartlett, Ph.D., is the President of Desert Falcon Consulting. He is a certified professional and registered member with the Society of Mining Engineers and a member of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Society of Economic Geologists, with over 35 years of mine operating experience. From 2003 to 2008, he built a highly successful mine automation team that produced a fully automated CAT 777 haul truck, D10T stockpile ripping dozer, autonomous drill (Flanders), and manned supported equipment (994 wheel loader) that actually moved material in a mine. This team was so successful, that Caterpillar invited them to work together with BHP in Peoria, Illinois on the CAT autonomous haulage system. In addition to his work on automation, he established programs to evaluate and implement shovel tooth detection (Toothmetrics), mine operator training (Immersive Technologies), slope stability monitoring (Ground Probe), UAV or drone surveying (Trimble Gatewing X100 and UX5), machine health monitoring (MEMs), mine wireless communications (Cisco, 3DP and Rajant), GPS augmentation, tire monitoring, and high density polyethylene plastic recycling. He participated on the Board and Technical Committees at CRC Mining in Brisbane, Australia from 2004 through 2011 for Phelps Dodge, Freeport, and Newmont. Mark received his B.S. degree in Geology and his Ph.D. in Economic Geology from Oregon State University; he was one of the youngest Ph.D. graduates ever from the Geosciences school. While attending the university, he worked in mining exploration, petroleum exploration, aerial photo interpretation, and started his own petrographic consulting business.

Zoli Lukacs, Independent ConsultantGMG Leader, Asset Management Working Group
Zoli is a Mining Engineer, currently Senior Advisor, Asset Management Strategy at JDS Mining and Energy. In previous positions he was responsible for Asset Optimization, responsible for operational excellence and asset management at a major copper mine, Director of Reliability, responsible for developing and implementing a maintenance planning and reliability strategy for a mining fleet of over 200 units, Director of Maintenance Planning and Technology as well as Operations Manager for a major mining contractor. He has held consulting positions as Manager, Mining Services and Managing Consultant, Global Maintenance Practice, at leading mining consulting firms. His experience is based on a strong operational background gained over 20 years with leading mine operations, involved in short range planning, cost management, marketing and logistics support and maintenance planning. During this time he developed interest in process improvement and performance management practices, systems design and application and technology strategy development and implementation. Zoli is a strong advocate of knowledge and best practices exchanges through involvement in CIM and SMART and the GMG.

Roy Irvine, Forum Director, Real IRMGMG Leader, Common Reference Framework Working Group
Roy qualified as a geologist in 1978 from Dundee University, Scotland. He spent 27 years with De Beers working across many of the mining processes, with a focus on data management, reporting and quality assurance. After leaving De Beers he worked for Datamine Software, managing the Discovery processes and software then moved to Kinross Gold in Mauritania as the database QA/QC Manager. He has been associated with The Open Group for the last decade and was part of the team who developed the Exploration and Mining Business Reference model. He is passionate about teaching (at all levels), knowledge sharing and assisting people to clearly understand their roles in an organization.
Marcus Thomson, Manager, Innovation & Prosperity Office, CEMIGMG Leader, Data Access and Usage Working Group
Marcus is Manager of the Innovation & Prosperity Office at Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) in Sudbury, Ontario. In this role, he leads CEMI’s Smart Mining program, which supports underground mines in the demonstration of innovative digital solutions from Canadian small-to-medium enterprises. This includes providing functions such as project definition, technology scouting, engaging funding agencies, and recruiting project partners. The goal is to create connected, interoperable solutions that improve mining productivity, safety, and sustainability while advancing guidelines and standards. Before CEMI, he has been a General Manager and Business Development Manager in industrial, corporate software, and telecommunications verticals. He holds a bachelor’s degree and is pursuing a Masters’ in Business Administration at Laurentian University.

Aidan Giblett is Senior Technical Advisor – Mineral Processing at Newmont Mining Corporation. His key responsibilities include providing technical support to global operations, development projects and research programs. Aidan has over 20 years’ experience in gold & base metals extractive metallurgy including project development, commissioning, operations and research program management, with a primary field of focus in comminution. He graduated from the Western Australian School of Mines in 1994, with an honours degree in Minerals Engineering and Extractive Metallurgy. Aidan is also chair of the AusIMM Metallurgical Society.

Laura Mottola is the President and CEO of Flow Partners Inc., a Canadian consulting company operating in Chile, and Director of Great Lakes Graphite Inc., a company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. She is recognized globally as a leader in Lean Mining, mining automation, and technology and innovation in the natural resources sector. Laura is a mining engineer with a Masters of Engineering in Mining Automation from McGill University. A seasoned professional and business leader with more than 20 years of global experience in mining, Laura was named one of 100 most inspirational women in mining by Women in Mining UK. She developed and implemented a “Zero Harm Operational Excellence” program and an integrated mine-to-market Technology Strategy for the Sierra Gorda project in Chile. Laura is dedicated to innovation and development, integration of concepts from other industries, and a multidisciplinary approach. She is passionate about increasing productivity and teamwork in mining, and brings the leadership and vision needed to generate new opportunities. Laura has personally worked with clients such as Goldcorp, KGHM International, Sierra Gorda S.C.M., KMC Mining, Rio Tinto Technology & Innovation, IAMGold, Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold, Alcoa, Syncrude, Suncor, Cambior, Inco, and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum.
