Data and AI Working Group

The Data & AI Working Group helps the mining industry collect, share, integrate, govern, and apply data safely, effectively, and at scale — including through analytics, artificial intelligence, automation, and decision-support tools.

It brings together GMG’s former Data & Interoperability and Artificial Intelligence + Applications of Data working groups, reflecting how closely connected data foundations and advanced applications have become in mining.

Why Data and AI Matters

Mining organizations rely on data from equipment, sensors, operational systems, planning tools, laboratories, suppliers, regulators, and technology partners to support critical decisions. When that data is difficult to access, inconsistent, poorly governed, or trapped in disconnected systems, it limits the industry’s ability to improve safety, productivity, sustainability, and operational performance.

At the same time, effective analytics, AI, automation, and digital tools depend on strong data foundations. This Working Group addresses the full data lifecycle — from data quality, interoperability, access, exchange, and governance through to practical applications of analytics, machine learning, AI-enabled decision support, automation, and digital twins.

The emphasis is on real operational value. The group recognizes that data and AI maturity vary widely across mining companies, and that simpler analytics, decision-support tools, or improved data practices are often more effective than complex AI deployments.

Key topics

    • Data quality, readiness, governance, ownership, access, security, and trust
    • Interoperability between mining systems, software platforms, equipment, and organizations
    • Data exchange between operators, suppliers, laboratories, regulators, technology providers, and partners
    • Reducing manual data handling and improving data quality, timeliness, consistency, and reliability
    • Practical adoption of standards, shared terminology, governance models, and common data approaches
    • Applications of analytics, machine learning, AI, simulation, automation, and digital twins
    • Understanding where AI is useful — and where simpler analytics or decision-support tools may be more effective
    • Building industry knowledge around AI, data fundamentals, implementation approaches, risks, and limitations
    • Supporting iterative, value-driven implementation rather than large, high-risk technology deployments

Objectives

Key focus areas include:

Addressing priority business and operational use cases where poor data interoperability, low data quality, or immature analytics drive cost, risk, or inefficiency.

Enabling effective cross-organizational data exchange— between operators, suppliers, laboratories, regulators, and partners — while reducing manual data handling and improving data quality, timeliness, and reliability for decision-making.

Supporting practical adoption of standards and governance models, including data ownership, security, and trust, to enable collaboration.

Building foundational understanding of AI and the applications of data— what different methods are, where they are applicable, and where simpler analytics or decision-support tools are the better choice.

Encouraging iterative, value-driven implementation approaches rather than large, high-risk deployments.

Treating data readiness, quality, infrastructure, and governance as prerequisites for advanced applications such as analytics, AI, automation, and digital twins

Potential Projects

The Working Group is developing a roadmap, informed by GMG community input, to prioritize future work and identify where industry collaboration can provide the greatest value. Potential areas of focus include:

    • Priority data and AI use cases across the mining value chain
    • Data exchange and interoperability challenges between operators, suppliers, software providers, laboratories, regulators, and partners
    • Practical approaches to data governance, ownership, access, security, and trust
    • Data readiness and quality requirements for analytics, AI, automation, and digital twins
    • AI education, implementation guidance, use cases, risks, and limitations
    • Pilot opportunities that validate practical approaches and support broader industry adoption
    • Coordination with other GMG Working Groups where data, KPIs, standards, or interoperability are critical to implementation
