Schedule

This opening session frames the big questions: why are we adopting new technologies, what technologies are available, and how do we decide which ones are right for our operations?

Safety Share – Making Serious Injury/Fatality Prevention Real – Taking Risk Management to the Next Level

Building on the good work of the mining industry to significantly reduce overall injury frequencies, we now join with a major effort that addresses the prevention of persisting serious (life altering) injury and fatality (SIF) incidents. To date we have worked in conjunction with other major industry sectors to develop SIF prevention strategies that are being increasingly adopted and/or piloted in mine operations.

This presentation checks in on mining work in multiple settings and from recent conferences where our industry has innovated to develop an understanding of SIF incident cause. This has spurred creative solutions for SIF incident prevention. These informed strategies do not call for “more” scope in our safety management systems, but rather “different” approaches with existing resources. These include shifting our focus in workplace prevention efforts, leveraging emerging technologies, employing artificial intelligence, applying Human and Organizational (HOP) principles, and using cultural empowerment to enable SIF prevention.

A resulting SIF prevention roadmap will be presented along with a vision for collaborating to integrate associated leading practices industry wide.

Working Session | Why aren’t we moving faster with technology, and why should we care?

This interactive session explores why mining’s technology adoption often lags and what’s at stake when it does. In small-group discussions, participants will identify key challenges—such as understanding technology options, verifying fit, and gaining buy-in—and consider the value that faster implementation could deliver for safety, productivity, and sustainability. The session will capture practical insights and real-world perspectives to inform future GMG initiatives

GMG Projects:

  • Zero Entry Mining;
  • Safe Mixed Fleet (with surface lens);
  • Energy Management Across the Mine Site

Open Discussion | The Changes of Mining – Smarter, Safer, and More Productive

This panel explores how mining is evolving through the thoughtful application of technology, starting with clearly defining operational problems and matching them to the right solutions. As data and digital tools become core to mining, the industry is achieving smarter, safer, and more productive operations. Panelists will discuss how this alignment of need and technology has delivered real benefits, how effectiveness is measured across safety, productivity, and environmental goals, and how the business case for technology continues to evolve.

This section focuses on what it really takes to deploy and scale new technology in a live mining operation — and how to avoid common pitfalls.

Working Session | Accelerating Technology Implementation

This hands-on session will explore the real-world barriers to implementing new technologies in mining operations and how they can be overcome. Working in small groups using a visual two-curve template, participants will identify current challenges, map the gap between today’s and ideal practices, and imagine what could be achieved with unlimited resources. The outcomes will help confirm GMG’s ongoing projects, and identify opportunities for future guidance and collaboration.

From Prototype to Pit: Lessons from Deploying Emerging Technologies in the Field

Deploying novel technology in mining means overcoming harsh environmental conditions, remote locations, and the need for seamless integration with existing systems. Drawing on MistyWest’s work with leading mining tech innovators in the world, such as developing advanced subsurface imaging hardware with Ideon Technologies, Taylor Cooper will share lessons learned in taking breakthrough ideas from concept to full-scale operation.

This panel will explore adoption methods (pilot, evolution, revolution, big bang, agile), challenges and complexities of rolling out organization-wide application systems, including infrastructure, change management, workforce readiness, cross-functional alignment, obsolescence and integration with other systems.

The objective of the panel will be to share lessons learned in rolling out new technologies and scaling up to full adoption or to multiple sites.

Panelists to date:

  • Liam Murphy, CEO and Co-Owner, Innoflo Solutions
  • Martin Roseke, Technical Lead Autonomous Haul Systems, Imperial Oil
  • Mike Lipsett, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Poole Chair in Management for Engineers, University of Alberta
  • Taylor Cooper, CEO, MistyWest
  • Tim Skinner (Moderator), President, SMART Systems Group

Once technology is deployed, the focus shifts to getting the most from it every day. This section explores the operational foundations that should be established before deployment and continually strengthened during operations. These are the levers that unlock sustained high performance and continuous improvement across the mine.

In Pursuit of Incremental Value at A Mid-Sized Operation

Congratulations, you’ve implemented an FMS – Now what?
This presentation delves into the practical realities of extracting value from mining technology systems, though standardization, benchmarking, data-informed decision making and stakeholder engagement. It showcases how incremental wins, rather than sweeping transformations, drove sustained value creation and increased asset utilization at Conuma Resources. Michael’s presentation shares insights into the challenges encountered, the factors that contributed to both successes and failures, and the tactics, and perseverance, that helped to widen system adoption and deliver tangible ROI.

Working Session | Current state of operational excellence – where are the gaps and how can we fill them?

This interactive session invites participants to reflect on what operational excellence looks like in practice and how mining operations can better realize value from their technologies. Working in small groups, participants will identify where performance is strong, where gaps exist, and what’s needed to close them—from process improvements to cultural shifts. The discussion will surface practical insights to guide continuous improvement and future GMG initiatives on operational excellence.

Maximizing Shift Productivity with Short Interval Control

Short Interval Control (SIC) is a structured approach that enables mine operations teams to detect and respond to production issues in real time. Unlike traditional reporting methods that rely on end-of-shift summaries, SIC provides continuous feedback throughout the shift, allowing for immediate corrective actions and better alignment between plan and execution.

An effective SIC program is built on three essential elements: people, process, and technology. When implemented together, these components help supervisors and operators identify bottlenecks early, assess production potential based on current equipment availability, and take targeted action to maximize shift performance.

SIC supports field-level decision making by making production data visible, understandable, and actionable. It quantifies the impact of time losses, translates delays into real production terms, and uses intuitive tools—such as traffic light indicators—to highlight where focus is needed most. This helps teams close performance gaps more efficiently and fosters accountability across crews.

Panel | Foundations for Application System Success

What are the prerequisites needed to ensure that our technology rollouts are a success? What are the common “forces” and risks at play that will impact the success of application systems that need to be considered? What have we learned from evolution and implementation of our current operations? How do we know we are meeting objectives? How do we develop metrics to determine the effectiveness of our implementations?

In defining what operational readiness for adoption of technology looks like, this panel will examine the impact of factors such as data management, infrastructure, organizational factors, and industry culture in our technology evolution and identify practical strategies and key enablers that helped move solutions from isolated projects to enterprise-wide adoption.

Panelists to date:

  • Cayce Kerr (Moderator), Founder and Principal Consultant, Iron Lion Mining
  • Julio Rafael Jove Prado, Manager – Business Intelligence, Agnico Eagle
  • Keith Merriam, Technical Director, Processing, Teck Resources
  • Tom O’Brien, Director of Mine Engineering, Suncor

The forum closes by exploring what the next generation of mining operations will look like and how we can prepare for it today.

Open Discussion | The Innovation Dilemma: Who Leads When Everyone Follows?

In an industry where safety and reliability often outweigh risk-taking, how do we truly innovate? This open discussion will explore mining’s “innovation dilemma”—why progress can stall when everyone aims to be first to be second. Building on industry experience and real-world examples, participants will examine where innovation should be directed, what barriers persist, and how collaboration between operators, suppliers, academia, and groups like GMG can turn intent into action.
