08 Nov Emerging topic: Location Tracking
Location tracking has emerged as a potential new project for the Underground Mining Working Group. Systems for tracking, locating and monitoring the activity of people and things have many potential benefits because they improve situation awareness and lead to safer, more productive and more efficient operations.
On the surface, high-precision GPS has been a driver of new applications and capabilities in mining. However, GPS is unavailable for underground mines. Therefore, other emerging technologies for underground mining must be considered in order to uncover the benefits of precise and accurate location tracking.
With the advent of new underground location technologies, there is an identified need to develop an instructive document for mining companies looking to implement tracking within their mines based on mining-specific use cases. Ultimately, there is the need for greater interoperability between location tracking technologies to enable the enhanced precision and accuracy for high-value applications.
