As part of the GMG Partners Webinar Series, AMIRA’s Head of Global Alliances Patricio Pastorelli will provide an overview of how Amira is creating global collaborations and partnerships to solve our mining industry’s challenges.
Following the Covid-19 pandemic, the mining sector’s challenges are far from over.
In a world of deeper mines with more complex ore bodies and high environmental and social risks, mining companies remain under exceptional pressure. Operators globally are striving to meet challenges such as tailings management and rising energy costs while heightening efficiency and improving safety.
Patricio Pastorelli will discuss how AMIRA is building global capability and generating leverage to support the development of transformational research and development, innovation and implementation (called R&D+I2).
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Patricio Pastorelli is the Head of Global Alliances for Amira Global, he has over 15 years of experience working in corporate innovation, venture capital and ecosystem development in both private and public sector, previously working for Fundación Chile, Austrade and CORFO, in vertical such as Mining, Technology Information and Education. GMG is holding an in-person workshop in Sudbury, ON, Canada on June 16 to have critical discussions on the key priorities for advancing underground mining and define a strategy to drive collaboration to address these priorities.
In recent discussions with more than 35 mining companies, some priority areas identified included enabling innovation and technology advancement; data integration and management; people, culture and skills; decarbonisation, energy and GHG reduction; common language and processes; and good operational practices.
Additional underground mining priorities identified include autonomous mining; communications technologies; electrification (including battery safety, charging, long-term planning, overall energy management and regulations); data and connectivity; and workforce and training.
This workshop will be an opportunity to sit with peers and get the priorities you’re tackling on the table to determine the common challenges to address together. Outcomes from the workshop will be guidance to the GMG Underground Mining Working Group steering committee to develop their work plans and projects.

Tomorrow’s mining: Innovating to improve the way we mine
What does it take to open mindsets to embrace innovation and alternative solutions in mining? How do we ensure our workforce (now and tomorrow) is the best it can be? Why do we allow for even one person to not feel safe in our industry?
To achieve the global vision of a safe, sustainable and productive mining industry of tomorrow will require a cultural shift across the industry – safety culture, innovation culture, change management, diversity and inclusion and more. Culture is the core element that will define success.
This forum will delve into the industry’s top priority areas common to most mining operations today, looking at technologies and processes while considering cultural requirements. We will hear case studies and demonstrations from innovators, implementors and operators; peers will share experiences and expertise to define opportunities; together we look across and outside the mining industry for new ways to better how we mine.
Topics that will be covered include:
• Autonomous mining
• GHG emissions reduction – the road to net zero
• Integration, interoperability and data management
• Emerging technologies implementation
• Operational best practices
