GMG Workshop: Mobile Equipment Open Data Consensus V2

Calling on experts – join and collaborate in real-time!

In response to a high level of input from mining companies and OEMs, there is an ongoing urgency to talk about access to mobile equipment data. OEMS are looking to understand what mining companies need the data for and how they are going to use it, and what pain points exist for their customers. On the flip side, mining companies report challenges on accessing data and are looking to understand what is available to them. Together, we will find that common ground and identify where the gaps are in the system.

Therefore, the next steps are to clearly define the problem statement and to establish industry alignment. After this, we must reach a consensus to how to best address these key challenges.

In order to achieve this, we are seeking your help. It is important that company representatives send subject matter experts with operational knowledge to collaborate towards:

  • Obtaining clarity on what mobile equipment data challenges mining companies are experiencing and how it impacts their operations
  • Understanding what data is currently available
  • Discussing use cases of what works/doesn’t work
  • Identifying a plan for moving forward to provide valuable guidance to the mining industry

To accommodate multiple time zones, we have scheduled separate dates and times for the workshops:

May 21, 2020 – 8:00PM – 11:00PM EDT  | 00:00AM – 3:00AM UTC (May 22)

June 11, 2020 – 8:00AM – 11:00AM EDT | 12:00PM – 3:00PM UTC

GMG Mobile Equipment Open Data Project

This project is to develop a consensus-based guideline between mine operators and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that provides a clear understanding of what open data means, industry priorities around it, acceptable uses of information and the relationships between stakeholders. The purpose is to enable mine operators to make data-driven decisions in order to prevent failures and safety incidents and to enable innovation and continuous improvement.
The first edition of the GMG Mobile Equipment Open Data Guideline (2016) identified onboard datasets that should be available to equipment owners in real or near real-time, read only format. Since its publication, increased digitalization and adoption of technologies such as autonomous systems have made the issues surrounding open data even more complicated while also making their resolution more pressing. While a draft for a second version, which focused more on guiding principles rather than specific data points, was circulated for review in 2019, but industry stakeholders identified a need for further engagement.

Workshop prep

To optimize our time together, here are some things to consider (from your and your company’s perspectives) before we meet:

  • Which are the key challenges regarding data?
  • What type of data is currently available and easily accessible?
  • What data is required and why is it needed?
  • What type of data will be needed in the future?
