GMG Workshops: Battery Electric Vehicles in Mining

We’re reaching out to enlist your participation in the third edition of the Battery Electric Vehicles in Mining guideline project, which aims to update the previous version of the guideline leveraging lessons learned, particularly related to safety and maintenance, and accommodating technology advancements. It will also add information to provide valuable guidance to the surface mining community. Learn more about the project here or read the current guideline here.

Background

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have seen many advancements in the past two years. Further, there is a continued urgency around reducing greenhouse gases and a growing industry interest in adopting battery electric technologies, in both the underground and surface communities. Advancements such as the greater variety of battery chemistries on the market, changing ventilation requirements and varied charging philosophies need to be captured and recorded based on real operating experiences. There is therefore a need to develop a third edition of the guideline in order to consider these new learnings and technologies with which to provide more guidance to the industry.

While the first two editions (published in 2017 and 2018) of the GMG BEV guideline covered underground mining, this one will expand its scope to include surface mining as well. This version of the guideline will highlight current technology in all sections of the previous editions as well as identify and update BEV performance in both working environments. Updates will include the latest input based on best practices as it relates to the performance and utilization of equipment. It will also expand to include surface mining in order to assist key stakeholders as the industry continues to evolve.

Because of how rapidly the industry is moving forward towards the electrification of surface and underground mines, the industry has expressed a need for updated guidance on BEVs and for it to also address the unique challenges that surface mining faces. The first and second editions of the GMG Recommended Best Practices for Battery Electric Vehicles in Underground Mining brought together a community of companies involved in the development and adoption of electric mining technologies. Beyond the value of the guidelines themselves, many companies have expressed the value of bringing together the operator and OEM communities in a collaborative space to create the guidelines.
