GMG-CIM Montreal Forum: Artificial Intelligence in Mining
As a hub for artificial intelligence (AI) research and innovation, Montreal was chosen as the ideal location for our AI in Mining Forum. Held in partnership with CIM on May 1, the forum is taking place in conjunction with the CIM 2019 Convention.
Montreal is home to 11 universities with leading tech programs and more than 250 researchers* and doctoral students working in AI-related fields. One research institution of particular prestige is the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA), known globally as the top group of Deep Learning researchers. The city also hosts many AI-focused startups and tech businesses that are driving AI innovation outside of academia. AI-focused institutions and businesses in Montreal have received considerable funding from both the government and private sector tech giants including Microsoft, Facebook, Google and Samsung.
Mining is also prominent in Quebec (the province in which Montreal is located). Quebec’s 26 producing mines account for one-fifth of Canada’s mineral production.** Bringing these two industries together is critical as AI-enabled technologies are becoming increasingly available to the mining industry. GMG has already experienced a wave of enthusiasm for the recently-launched AI in Mining Working Group and is looking forward to this opportunity to further facilitate collaboration and discussion.
