GMG Forum: Johannesburg
Apr 2 - Apr 3
Southern Africa’s rich geology and history have established it as one of the world’s top mining regions. GMG has partnered with SAIMM to host the second 2019 Future Mining Forum on April 2-3 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Countries in Southern Africa have a considerable stake in the future of mining. While the region has some of the world’s largest reserves of platinum, diamonds, vanadium, gold, chrome and several other minerals, developing the infrastructure to harness these resources is a challenge. A strong game plan for the future of mining is necessary. To this end, key topics of this forum will be digitization, technological innovation and safety.
Located near the gold-rich Witwatersrand ridge and born out of the gold industry, Johannesburg – known in the Zulu language as Egoli, “place of gold” – is an especially apt location for the forum. The gold mines near Johannesburg, such as AngloGold Ashanti’s TauTona mine, are some of the deepest in the world, making the city an ideal place to discuss underground innovation such as implementing battery electric vehicles, short interval control (SIC), and autonomous systems underground, which are also critical topics at this forum.
