GMG Workshop: Functional Safety for Autonomous Equipment (Sudbury)
GMG will host a workshop April 25 in Sudbury, Canada to continue developing content for the Functional Safety for Autonomous Equipment guideline project. Participants will be focusing on ensuring there is key content on functional safety in underground environments, as most of the content so far has been developed for surface contexts.
What is this project?
Functional safety is a key challenge requiring industry collaboration to enable advancement in autonomous mining. Mobile automation is still in the forming stages of development, and as a result the industry is not yet aligned:
- Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are still evolving and are at different stages of maturity for managing functional safety.
- There are currently no standards specifically for automating mining equipment.
- Regulatory authorities might not be able to provide specific guidance on the requirements for functional safety.
This guideline aims to provide a unified industry understanding. This understanding involves not only clearly defining what functional safety is but also identifying who is responsible for it, creating a collective view of minimum requirements, and presenting general guidance on testing and verifying it.
An agenda and any documentation will be sent to all who register.
