Enabling Solutions for Access to Restricted Mineral Reserves

The growing complexity of deposits, coupled with the need to operate in more challenging and restricted environments, requires a transformation in the way blasting operations are designed and executed. In this context, blasting is positioned as a critical link in enabling access to hard-to-reach mineral reserves, while ensuring safety, precision, and operational efficiency.

This presentation addresses how the integration of advanced solutions within Orica’s value chain enables us to address the main limitations of modern mining. Through the optimal application of explosive energy, detailed knowledge of the rock mass, and the use of digital tools for flexible planning and results control, we are able to improve the predictability and precision of operations.

Specific examples will be presented where, through adaptive blasting design and advanced terrain characterization, and the use of technologies/techniques, it has been possible to access reserves previously restricted by complex geotechnical conditions, proximity to critical infrastructure, or environmental constraints.

Likewise, advances aimed at eliminating direct exposure of personnel to risk areas are noteworthy, enabling a progressive path toward total automation of the blasting process. These developments contribute to the reduction of unwanted impacts, optimization of fragmentation and ground stability, and ultimately, a safer, more sustainable, and efficient operation.

Mine Design and Operations for Tomorrow: Innovation Through Collaboration

The mining industry is facing major challenges, deeper deposits, lower ore grades, stronger environmental and social expectations, and a strong demand for many metals that is forecast to significantly outpace supply. Tackling these issues will require new technologies and ways of working. Solutions like in-place mining, hydrogen-powered equipment, and automation offer potential solutions to some of these challenges.  However, for these technologies to realise such value, mine design and operational processes will need to be adapted. This presentation will share practical examples of how these technologies can be integrated into mine design and operations, drawing on lessons from other industries and from collaborative work developed through innovation consortia.

Autonomous priming system for open-pit mining: challenges and results

Automation in mining has become a key trend aimed at enhancing safety, efficiency, and ensuring continuous operations. Within this framework, we introduce an autonomous priming solution developed to carry out the automated loading and placement of explosive initiators in blastholes in open-pit mines. The system minimizes worker exposure to hazardous conditions while streamlining activities in highly demanding environments. This study examines the main technical challenges addressed during development as well as the operational advantages observed when using an autonomous priming system, emphasizing its potential for widespread adoption in large-scale surface mining. The purpose of this field validation is to assess the system’s technical performance under conditions that closely reflect real operational scenarios. To this end, the robotic unit was tested in a controlled environment that reproduced common difficulties in blasting operations.

Optimizing Flotation Circuits with AI-Driven Solutions: Enhancing Process Stability and Metal Recovery

The mining industry faces ongoing challenges in balancing sustainability and production targets while processing increasingly complex ores. Flotation, a critical stage in mineral processing, remains one of the most intricate and variable operations.

To address these challenges and support the sector’s digital transformation, Intellisense.io new AI-driven flotation optimization solution was deployed at a large copper operation in Chile. The system integrates first-principle models with artificial intelligence to optimize process performance and support production–sustainability goals.

The real-time solution continuously evaluates flotation performance and recommends optimized setpoints for key variables such as airflow and froth depth. These recommendations are guided by a multi-variable reward function that can also incorporate operational constraints.

Leveraging a digital twin of the flotation circuit, the solution enables consistent operation, dynamic adaptation to changing ore characteristics, and seamless integration with both upstream and downstream processes.
