In-Person Workshop | Framework for Safe Mixed Fleet Operations in Underground Mining
Published: March 21,2025This is one of two separate and interactive workshops GMG is hosting in Sudbury, designed to complement the events at the Sudbury Forum (June 10-11). These sessions allow dedicated time outside of the Forum program to dive deeper into key industry challenges and contribute to GMG’s ongoing project work. While closely aligned with the Forum, the workshops are separately organized and require separate registration.

Join us for a session shaping GMG’s Framework for Safe Mixed Fleet Operations in Underground Mining work. Led by Christian Grante, Senior Specialist – Autonomous Vehicle Systems, Combitech and GMG Project Co-lead, this workshop will introduce the Industry Applications and Ecosystems white papers, two of the deliverables for this initiative.
This session is part of a global effort to advance GMG’s project work through in-person collaboration.
In breakout groups, participants will brainstorm ideas to help define and begin developing the framework for these two papers.
The session will conclude with a discussion on insights gathered.
About this Project
This initiative establishes a safety framework for mixed traffic operations, enabling coexistence between autonomous and manually operated equipment. Deliverables include:
- Theoretical Foundations: Developing a validated safety system using System-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) and formal safety assurance methodologies.
- Technical Implementation: Defining safety protocols for two-way ranging, obstacle detection, and collision avoidance systems.
- Industry Applications: Documenting real-world case studies of multi-vendor interoperability and sensor fusion-based safety systems.
- Ecosystem: Develop a vision for the system of the strategy for transitioning from current innovations to an open ecosystem.
