GMG Publishes “Introduction to Geometallurgy” White Paper
White paper lays the groundwork for a suite of publications focused on harnessing the benefits of geometallurgical programs
Ormstown, Quebec, March 5, 2025: Global Mining Guidelines Group (GMG) is pleased to announce the publication of the Introduction to Geometallurgy white paper, a foundational resource designed to introduce and support the implementation of geometallurgical principles in mining projects.
Geometallurgy is an interdisciplinary practice essential for evaluating and optimizing mining operations. It focuses on the spatial characterization of ore and non-ore types within a deposit, considering their impact on processing, mining performance, and environmental sustainability. The white paper is designed to familiarize practitioners with the discipline and consolidate key geometallurgical elements into a single document, providing a roadmap for future GMG guidelines in this area.
“Well-structured geometallurgical programs are essential for optimizing mining processes and ensuring projects meet plan and budget goals, particularly in the face of complex orebodies, cost pressures, and ESG priorities,” says Keith Merriam, Project Lead and Technical Director, Processing, Teck Resources Limited. “By thoroughly characterizing orebody variability and integrating best practices, companies can make informed decisions throughout the mine life cycle – from exploration to closure – enhancing operational efficiency and value.”
The white paper provides an overview of critical elements including:
- Common data reporting
- Representative sampling
- Geological characterization
- Metallurgical and environmental characterization
- Data consolidation and quality assurance
- Model development and evaluation
- Project optimization
- Reconciliation
Importantly, the white paper will also serve as a bridging document for two complementary guidelines:
- Representative Sampling Guideline
This guideline will provide clear, actionable considerations for geometallurgical sampling, encompassing the evaluation of sample representativity, sample selection, and sample management. It will include guidance, case studies demonstrating practical applications, and examples of templates to streamline processes. - Common Data Reporting Guideline
This guideline will aim to establish robust data reporting standards, including user guides for common geometallurgical and mineralogical tests. The guidance will focus on data representation, format, definition, structuring, tagging, and reporting for key processes, such as comminution, flotation, leaching, mineralogy, and hyperspectral analysis.
“This white paper is a cornerstone resource that not only introduces geometallurgy to those new to the field but will also support the development of best practices through the complementary guidelines under the geometallurgy umbrella,” says Heather Ednie, CEO, GMG. “Together, these resources will empower the mining industry to harness the full potential of geometallurgy.”
The white paper and the forthcoming guidelines reflect GMG’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in mining. By uniting key concepts and providing actionable guidance, these resources aim to enhance operational efficiency, sustainability, and data-driven decision-making.
