Mining’s Future in Focus: Insights from GMG’s Sudbury Forum
Published: July 10,2025
In June, GMG’s Sudbury Forum gathered underground mining professionals, technology developers, researchers, and OEMs for two days of real-world case studies, strategic dialogue, and interactive sessions. With a focus on electrification, digital integration, systems thinking, and decarbonization, the forum highlighted the importance of practical implementation and cross-functional collaboration.
Core themes and insights centred on making technology practical, battery electric vehicles, underground systems and planning, decarbonization and energy, AI and data, and strategic mine design and systems thinking.
Key challenges identified:
Fragmented systems and siloed responsibilities
Underutilized and unstructured data
Disconnect between corporate climate goals and site-level plans
Workforce capability gaps in digital, systems, and maintenance integration
Lack of proactive, system-informed technology deployment
