Abstract

The concept of circularity has emerged as a pivotal framework to address the sustainability challenges faced by the mining and metals industry. This study examines the current state of play of circularity within this sector, and specifically with GMG members, exploring the various initiatives, challenges, and opportunities. Circular practices encompass the entire lifecycle of materials, from extraction to processing, utilization, and end-oflife management. The mining and metals industry, traditionally associated with linear production models, is undergoing a paradigm shift toward circularity driven by environmental concerns, regulatory pressures, and economic imperatives. Key initiatives include resource efficiency, recycling and reuse of materials, waste reduction, and the development of innovative technologies such as advanced material recovery and recycling processes. However, the industry faces multifaceted challenges including technological limitations, economic viability, regulatory complexity, and stakeholder engagement. Overcoming these hurdles requires collaborative efforts among industry stakeholders, governments, and academia, to foster innovation, incentivize circular practices, and establish supportive policy frameworks. Despite the challenges, the transition toward circularity presents significant opportunities for the mining and metals industry, including enhanced resource security, reduced environmental footprint, improved cost-efficiency, and the cultivation of a more sustainable and resilient future. This paper provides insights into the current landscape of circularity in the mining and metals industry, serving as a foundation for further research and action toward sustainable resource management.
