25 Feb Maria Gilker
Maria joined GMG in the spring of 2020, with a plan to do interesting work, meet new people and possibly travel. That exact week, the pandemic hit and the plan is on hold as she continues to work solo in her home office, surrounded by her adult children navigating online school and listening to her colleagues talk about work trips to South Africa, Ireland and Australia. Despite these challenges, Maria continues to be inspired daily by the mining community and the diverse GMG team who were not even in her life a year ago.
Maria holds a BA in Honours English Literature from Concordia University in Montreal and a CFP designation from FP Canada which led her to manage the Marketing Communications department of a Canadian bank as the only anglophone in a staff of 2,000, back in the day when email didn’t exist in the workplace. Fast forward over 20 years during which time Maria raised two athletes, developed an intimate relationship with arenas and swimming pools in the pre-dawn hours and honed her entrepreneurial skills in two small businesses. She’s been presenting on Zoom long before it was cool and can be heard repeating daily “be part of the solution, not the problem”, while writing in her gratitude journal.
Lifelong loves include any and all forms of exercise, preferably outside, reading and more recently, watching European Netflix series. Adulthood presented her with a couple of unexpected roles: volunteering, currently as the Vice-President of the local figure skating region and as a level 3 official with Swimming Canada, and becoming a two-time cancer survivor. Maria is confident her first novel, as yet not started, will be published soon and her name will finally show up on the Forbes 50 over 50 list of women shattering age and gender norms. Grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow with the GMG team!
