Bio

Denise Callahan is Director of PMO, Analytics and Strategic Planning at The Doe Run Corporation. In this position, Denise is responsible for development of the enterprise wide strategy and execution of that strategy through portfolio, program and project management. Denise is also responsible for the company data analytics program and the integration and use of IoT. Denise has over 25 years of experience managing projects and leading IT organizations. The Doe Run PMO was a finalist for the 2010 PMO of the Year Award and was selected as the United States representative for the 2018 PMO Global Awards. Denise is an accomplished communicator and has spoken at local, national and international conferences on data analytics, mining and project management topics. Denise Callahan holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from Missouri State University and a Master’s degree in Information Technology from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Presentation Title: Increasing Safety, Access and Detail in Underground and Contained Environments: Proven Operational Success of 3D Scanning and Visual Inspections Underground.

Abstract

UAS Incorporated is proud to showcase success stories in operational inspections and mapping in a wide variety of mining environments. Cutting-edge Hovermap LIDAR scanners by our partners at Emesent are delivering unprecedented access to areas beyond visual line of site into unknown environments, and out of reach of conventional CMS scanners. Multi-platform operation allows scanning of stopes using a drone platform, mapping ramps and drifts while mounted on a vehicle, descending down an orepass on a tether, or a walk-through scan of a mill. Visual inspection using collision-resistant drone platforms from Flyability allow access to the narrowest of spaces and vessels, and are proven tools for emergency response. This richly detailed data can offer all operational units a wealth of new information for design, planning, and analysis.

Presentation Title: The Cost and Capabilities of Tablet and IoT Based Underground Fleet Management

Abstract

Smart devices such as iPads and wireless sensors have transformed modern life and are poised to revolutionize the mining industry. Internet of Things (IoT) and tablet-based mobile apps have enabled affordable fleet management (FMS) and safety tracking in mines, quarries, and mine construction projects. Several recent innovations in technology and then deployments of innovative IoT nearables for tracking cycles, even sequences automatically, locating personnel, low-cost proximity sensing, as well as collecting digital safety and maintenance forms, has shown that technology cost is no longer a challenge to overcome. For example, surface mining wireless infrastructure can be simplified by using modern-day LTE communications rather than expensive proprietary Wi-Fi. LTE is built into tablets, along with a myriad of other sensors such as inertial systems that can sense road roughness and Bluetooth radios that can determine proximity between machines and people in real-time. The natural tablet interface also allows for a type of feedback called gamification that creates an addiction to high performance and safety compliance. A cost comparison for using traditional versus IoT and tablet-based underground fleet management shows a significant cost reduction. Proximity measurements, underground zone detection, and inertial sensing capabilities will demonstrate the inherent capabilities of the tablet to measure productivity and safety elements previously cost prohibitive. The challenges and benefits from several deployments of an iPad and IoT-based FMS at different underground mines throughout the world will be presented. This includes the key challenges facing these technologies such as entrenched existing concepts of the costs of technology, the technology selection process, and the need for focus on using data.

Bio (Sean Dessureault)

Dr. Dessureault was an associate professor at the University of Arizona with expertise in data mining of mining data and founded MISOM Technologies Inc., a technology company that developed a tablet-based mobile app, and modern approaches such as big data, IoT, and gamification to create an innovative form digitization and fleet management system platform. MISOM also provided data integration and advanced analytics. In late 2017 MISOM was acquired by of Mine Site Technologies Global (MST) wherein Dessureault is now the Chief Innovation Evangelist.

Bio (John Steel)

As a Mining Engineer John has worked for Xstrata and Barrick Gold Corporation located in Mount Isa New Brunswick and Saudi Arabia. He then moved into the supplier side joining the explosive service provider, EPC Groupe in Norway. After several years working in EPC Groupe he returned to Australia and joined Maxum in the Site Operational and Project Management team. Recently, John joined MST Global as the General Manager – Product Management and Marketing and is focused on positioning and placing technology solutions that greatly improve safety and efficiency in underground mining and tunnelling.

Abstract

LaTasha Swanson, Associate Service Fellow – Behavioral Science, NIOSH

Presentation Title: Exploring Technology Integration through Early Adopters’ Perspectives of Mobile Proximity Detection Systems

Abstract

Over the last four years, proximity detection systems, an automated safety technology, have received increased attention in the mining sector. In 2015, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) proposed a rule that would require underground mine operators to equip mobile machines with PDSs (mobile PDSs). While the proposed rule has not been enacted, some coal mines have implemented mobile PDSs on scoops and coal haulers. These early adopters have expressed several concerns. To explore stakeholders’ concerns and support the safe integration of mobile PDSs, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted human factors research that captured the perspectives and experiences of mineworkers and leaders who have implemented mobile PDSs. These studies identified (1) how task, mine, and system characteristics influence the fit of these systems and (2) factors that influence mineworkers’ trust in PDSs. The presentation will review key study findings and conclude with suggestions and considerations to help mines and equipment vendors and manufacturers safely integrate PDSs.

Bio

LaTasha Swanson, PhD, serves as a Behavioral Scientist for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Dr. Swanson works in the Human Factors Branch of the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division. She uses qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches to explore health and safety issues affecting the mining sector. She is most interested in exploring how behavior and communication influence occupational health and safety. Dr. Swanson has been involved in research examining health and safety concerns related to proximity detection systems for mobile machines and self-escape from underground coal mines. She received a PhD in Health Communication from Purdue University, and an MBA and BA from Indiana University.

Presentation Title: The Role of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) in Mining

Abstract

In recent years, there have been an explosion of unmanned aircraft in the personal and commercial space. Aside from the potential promise, the question remains “how can this technology best be used to improve the business of mining today?” This presentation discusses the various use cases of Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) in the mining environment. Although the technology has significant automated capabilities, the equipment also must operate within the regulations of the National Airspace under existing limitations. We seek to define the best use cases for the UAS and where automated technology can enhance safety, operating awareness, and efficiency of the mine.

Bio

Jose Hernandez holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master on systems engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso. Jose has experience from the manufacturing, oil and gas, and mining industry. Currently, Jose works as a Sr. Engineer in the research and development of new technologies applicable to mining for Freeport-McMoRan, and has lead and been heavily involved on projects such as: Unmanned Aerial Systems, Sampling automation, Collision Avoidance, and other technology projects related to innovation and automation.


Zoltan Lukacs, Senior Advisor, Asset Management Strategy, JDS Mining and Energy

Presentation Title: Tools for Innovation: Standardized Performance Metrics

Abstract

Effective KPIs provide insights into operational performance and identify opportunities for improvement within mining operations. Standardized industry KPIs allow meaningful comparisons between operations enabling identification of best practices raising the bar on overall industry performance. Evaluation of impacts of innovative technology and operating practices is facilitated by appropriate metrics. The presentation will introduce the GMG guideline for a Standardized Time Usage Model and Operational KPIs. Next steps in developing a standard OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) definition and maintenance and reliability KPIs will be introduced for discussion.

Bio

Zoli is a Mining Engineer, currently Advisor, Asset Management and Operational Readiness Strategy. In previous positions he was responsible for asset optimization and management, operational excellence, reliability, maintenance planning as well as operations management and various engineering positions. His experience is based on a strong operational background gained over 25 years with leading mine operations. Throughout his career, a strong focus has been operational improvement and innovation. He has participated in development of technology strategy and several systems design and implementation projects. Zoli is a strong advocate of knowledge and best practices exchanges through involvement in CIM, SMART and the GMG.

Bio 

Ethan is a Digital executive with more than 15 years of diverse technology, sales and leadership experience in financial, heavy industrial digital and IT based systems as well as global technology management. Bringing value through technology is key to Ethan’s success. He has built and led large state, regional and global teams. He is the Founder of Tech Rep Global where they focus on the proper Evaluation, Implementation and adoption of technology. Prior to Tech Rep Global Ethan moved from the IT manager for North America at Barrick Gold Corp. to a Digital Dev Ops/ Customer Success Director. His team was key to getting the value out of what Barrick spent on new digital technology. The focus was to make sure the customers/users knew what the program/product is, who is using it and that it is delivering on their investment. Prior to Barrick Ethan was the Operations Superintendent at NNE Construction, where his focus was land based terrestrial copper/fiber and microwave/cell tower installations in the intermountain west. He led the company in sales from $2 million to $10 million annually within 3 years. Ethan and his beautiful wife Stephanie run a family of four children, with 1 dog, 1 cat, 3 goats and 9 chickens. He is a coach in the local high school basketball program.


Mohammad Babaei, Lead, Digital Mining Innovation, Teck

Presentation: Using Machine Learning to Improve Haul Cycle Productivity

Bio

Dr. Mohammad Babaei has worked in a variety of contexts including open pit mines, consultancies, and universities. In his current role at Teck, he guides and supports digital innovations that improve safety, sustainability and productivity. For example, he led projects applying machine learning in mining and maintenance and developing a unique real-time diggability solution. He holds a PhD in Mining Engineering from the University of British Columbia and published several scientific papers and won several awards for his work. In 2017, he was featured CIM Magazine as one of their “Names to Know” feature. In 2018, he received one of the CIM-Bedford Canadian Young Mining Leaders Awards.

 


Marcelo Romero, Business Development Director, Operations, Hexagon Mining

Presentation Title: Fleet Management System, an investment that pays for itself

Abstract

The presentation reviews one of the last implementation in one of the largest silver mines in Mexico. After implementing HxGN MineOperate OP Pro, the mine saw almost immediate benefits in increased equipment utilization and production. Within six months, The mine registered improvements in reconciliation, high-grade material handling, elevation control and drill precision. In this presentation, learn how the mine accomplished all this.

Marcelo recently moved to Business Development Area. In the past, he oversaw Safety, Fleet Management Systems (FMS), Machine Guidance, and Machine Health product lines for open pit and underground. He has been closely involved with integrating these technologies since joining the Tucson, AZ office of Hexagon Mining in 2014. With around 20 years’ fleet management experience, Marcelo was previously an account manager for MX and the US, a machine guidance specialist, a global technical expert engineer for health maintenance solutions in the U.S., and deployment and support engineer in Chile

Dan Sutherland is the algorithmic leader of Biarri EMI, a company that enables organisations to make better business decisions, create and leverage efficiencies powered by data and mathematics. He uses the power of mathematics to deconstruct and predict patterns and changes in business process and activity focusing on improving operational efficiencies of machinery, schedules, people rostering and equipment maintenance. As CEO, Dan has consulted and overseen successful projects in the resources sector using mathematics as the driving force to optimise; short interval control & shift planning – Newcrest Mining, people and activity scheduling at large scale high capital assets – Origin Energy, Shell, Santos, cross-industry people rostering to proactively manage the movement & rosters of people – Harmony Gold, Origin Energy, BMA, asset auto design for intensive capital projects including design of CSG & Conventional Gathering Networks, further strategic and operational analytics projects for international companies – BP, Shell, Santos, Newcrest, Harmony Gold & more. Dan graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) First Class Honours, University Medal and as Class Valedictorian. He incorporates his background in Computational Neuroscience (field of study in which mathematical tools and theories are used to investigate brain function) to help solve complex problems in the business world. John Reay is Asset Manager at Sibanye Stillwater. John holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and an MBA from the University of Wyoming. John has over 30 years of experience and consulting in maintenance and asset management. John gained the experience in both metal and non-metal industries, including coal, copper, gold, iron ore, diamonds, borates, diatomaceous earth, soda ash and PGMs to name a few. John has been a CMRP since 2013.

William (Bill) Nassauer is head of Product Management for the AHS Center of Excellence division of Komatsu, where he leads a team focused on strategy and development of next generation autonomous technology and solutions for mines around the world. Bill has 15 years of experience in the mining sector, working with customers across the world to develop comprehensive, value-driven safety and productivity solutions. Bill received his MBA from Columbia University and his B.S. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Arizona. He is currently based in Tucson, AZ, where Komatsu’s AHS Center of Excellence division is located.
