Updates from the GMG Electric Mine Working Group

The GMG Electric Mine Working Group, launched last Fall, is gearing up to launch its first projects.

A project on electric equipment tracking would capture key learnings and KPIs and enable the development of case studies. The output would be a platform that takes a holistic approach in order to provide an understanding of how to optimize electric vehicle performance in a variety of contexts.

The group also aims to revise the GMG Recommended Best Practices for Battery Electric Vehicles in Underground Mining. These revisions are not only so that the guideline remains up to date, but they will also expand it to cover surface mining.

The working group also aims to provide industry-wide education through workshops, short courses, case studies and more.

GMG has also engaged Mike Mayhew of Mayhew Performance for project management in the working group. Mayhew has extensive experience in battery electric technologies from both the operator and supplier perspectives, having worked in this area at Kirkland Lake Gold and Artisan Vehicles.

“I’m looking forward to working with industry partners as we move towards implementing battery electric vehicles within the surface and underground mining industry,” says Mayhew. “GMG offers a neutral platform for industry to share knowledge, experience and tracking data in order to achieve best practices across the global mining industry. I am proud to be part of the next generation of mining.”

The working group will have a virtual meeting on March 31 at 9:00 AM EDT to discuss these projects. Contact us if you would like to join the call. Also, stay tuned for announcements about workshops coming up in April!

GMG will also be discussing the electric mine in Sweden later this month at the Electric Mine Conference and our Luleå Forum.
